چکیده
During the years 2000 and 2001, the Italian Ministry for University and Scientific Research funded four research projects covering various topics in the field of networking: IPPO (IP packet optical networks), NEBULA IP (Techniques for end-to-end quality of service control in multidomain IP networks), PLANET-IP (Planning IP networks), and RAMON (Reconfigurable access module for mobile computing applications). As a final joint event, the four projects converged in the preparation of the Second International Workshop on QoS in Multiservice IP Networks (QoS-IP 2003), which was held in Milan in February 2003. QoS-IP 2003 comprised 13 technical sessions, including two invited talks and the presentation of 53 high-quality papers selected from about one hundred submissions to the workshop. This special issue of Computer Networks includes extended versions of selected papers from QoS-IP 2003. The papers provide an overview of the topics discussed during the workshop and are representative of some of the most relevant research issues in the field of networking. The first two papers deal with solutions to improve the quality of service (QoS) in the Internet of today: one focuses on the provisioning of video streaming, the other on improvements achievable by acting on the end user behavior. A protocol for video streaming service is proposed in ‘‘Adaptive video streaming: pre-encoded MPEG-4 with bandwidth scaling,’’ by A. Balk, M. Gerla, D. Maggiorini, and M.Y. Sanadidi. By dynamically adapting the transmission rate to the network conditions, the protocol aims at achieving

متن کاملFramework for Capacity Planning of Multiservice IP Networks
Traffic demands on Internet today include delaysensitive traffic (e.g., IP telephony, e-commerce, video) that requires better than the standard ”best effort” service provided by IP networks. As a result, various new technologies and mechanisms to support all types of traffic with various performance requirements are being developed and implemented. The current methods for capacity planning of I...
متن کاملProviding Consistent Service Levels in IP Networks
The use of Internet as an ubiquitous communication platform puts a strong demand on service providers regarding the assurance of multiple service levels consistently. Designing flexible and simple service-oriented management strategies is crucial to support multiconstained applications conveniently and to obtain a deployable and sustainable service quality offer in multiservice IP networks. In ...
متن کاملA Fuzzy Based Three Color Meter/Marker for Diffserv Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)
Differentiated Services (Diffserv) which was proposed by Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), is a scalable and robust model for providing the end-to-end QoS. In the Diffserv networks, metering mechanisms are used to measure traffic stream. The single rate Three Color Meter (srTCM) [1],which was proposed by IETF, meters an IP packet stream and marks its packets either green, yellow, or red....
متن کاملA Novel Fuzzy Logic Base Scheduling Mechanism for Service Differentiation in IP Networks
Quality of Service (QoS) refers to a set of rules or techniques that help the network administrators use the available network resources optimally to manage the effects of congestion and to treat the applications according to their needs. The differentiated services architecture (DiffServ) allows providing quality of service to users. The major DiffServ premise is that individual flows with sim...
